The Social Justice Committee is dedicated to Christian charity and the corporal works of mercy in our parish and the extended community.

Spirit of Christmas   Return to top

Each year we collect food and other items for needy families in our community, with a special emphasis on helping families from our parish who may be in need of such assistance.

Casa Hogar Orphanage   Return to top

St. Charles Borromeo has a special bond with the Casa Hogar Orphanage in Lurin Peru, led by our friend Father Sebastian. Each year we collect funds to support the children in his care. We display pictures of the children we support, giving parishioners a more personal connection to the recipients of their generosity. The funds donated to the orphanage make a significant contribution to the childrens lives and community. This is a wonderful way to enrich a young person's life with your gift of time and money.

Agnes' Table   Return to top

This year we developed a menu, paid for the food items, and prepared a meal for needy people in our community through Agnes' Table, something we plan to do again. Agnes' Table is served each Tuesday evening at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chippewa Falls, and is coordinated by Starting Points, an organization which provides emergency housing and other services to the indigent and homeless in our area. Various community organizations, businesses and church groups volunteer to serve meals on a rotating schedule.

Support of our Troops in Iraq   Return to top

Father Dan Farley is serving as chaplain to our troops in Iraq. To support his work, the work of the troops and the needy children in that war-torn region, we collected and shipped many school supplies and stuffed animals. We will continue to support Fr. Farley's mission in Iraq with similar activities for as long as needed

Chippewa Area Food Pantry   Return to top

We started our food pantry donation effort in conjunction with the annual mail carriers' food pantry drives. We decided to continue this form of charitable giving on a routine basis since the need is great all year long. Parishioners are invited to bring in donations as often as possible and deposit them in a designated box in the narthex. These items are regularly delivered to the food pantry for distribution.

Right to Life   Return to top

The committee promotes positive messages regarding life issues as way to counteract the disturbing culture of death so prevalent in our society. One example is best exemplified by a cartoon "Umbert the Unborn" which now appears in our weekly bulletin. The cartoon rights were procured and paid for by a committee member from the parish. Awareness of and participation in various right to life events in the area is promoted by this group.
